STEP 1: SHEARING SHEEP AND BUYING WOOLEN FLEECES

The shearing of sheep is typically done by men. The sheep is first immobilized by lying it on its side. Then, the fleece is removed using large shears. It takes about 50 to 100 sheep to provide enough wool for a standard-sized rug.

STEP 2: WASHING AND PREPARING THE WOOL FLEECES

This stage is predominantly carried out by men. The sheep is secured while lying on its side, and the fleece is acquired using large scissors. Typically, it requires anywhere from 50 to 100 sheep to gather sufficient wool for a rug of standard size.

Subsequently, the women engage in the process of wool preparation, meticulously sifting through it to remove impurities such as twigs. Often, they soak the wool, beat it with a stick, and then gently wash it in the river before leaving it in the sun to both dry and bleach. By day's end, the cleaned wool is stored in homes, awaiting its use for several days.

STEP 3: CARDING

The wool undergoes a sequence of steps, starting with shearing, followed by washing and combing. Carding or combing the wool plays a pivotal role in the wool fabric production process. It serves the purpose of meticulously disentangling and aligning all the wool fibers in a uniform direction, facilitating a smoother spinning process. This task is accomplished using a pair of wooden boards known as "imchden" or carders, which are skillfully maneuvered back and forth with an animated motion.

STEP 4: WASHING THE SPUN WOOL

The yarn undergoes another round of washing and is then exposed to sunlight for drying. Afterward, it is stored until the loom is made ready.

STEP 5: WEAVING BEGINS

Three indispensable tools are at hand: a knife equipped with a hooked end, a pair of scissors, and a comb. Various hues of yarn are suspended above the loom, corresponding to the colors to be incorporated into the rug. The weaver proceeds by guiding a length of yarn between two tablecloths using the hook on the knife, drawing it taut with their opposite hand, and then severing it with the knife's blade. This sequence is repeated horizontally until the entire line of knots has been meticulously formed. Subsequently, the weaver employs a sturdy comb to firmly compress the knots, ensuring their secure placement. This meticulous process unfolds knot by knot, row by row, until the final carpet masterpiece takes shape.

STEP 6: WASHING AND DRYING THE CARPET

The washing and drying phase is a testament to the dedication and respect for tradition that Berber Home Deco embodies. It's a step that ensures every rug not only meets the highest standards of quality but also carries with it the spirit of Morocco. From the skilled hands of our artisans to the natural embrace of the Moroccan sun, this step in the process transforms each rug into a masterpiece that will grace your home with beauty and culture for years to come.
